A Happy Hut is a small tent-like item that your bird can hide inside,
it is made to hang by two fasterners from the top of the cage.
Birds sleep in them and sometimes sit on top of them. They are made from various kinds of material, and There are lots of differant sleeping huts on the market, that are made by differant manufacturers.
none of these huts are safe!!
any material happy hut/ snuggle tent etc…. is a hazard!! and I would never put one in any of my birds cages.
even if you check them every day, it only takes a short time for a bird to chew his way through a happy hut, and get into difficulty.
The hut could be fine when you went out to the shop, your bird could be DEAD on your return.

If you are not convinced!!

Then here are just a few of the many stories I have read about.

One lady had to rush her cockatiel to the vets after finding him caught up in his happy hut. The vet had to amputate his toe, and although the bird recovered, he was never the same again.

Before the incident her bird used to talk, but after that day, he never spoke another word, and a few years on, is still mute.

*************
A lady purchased a happy hut at a very good pet store.  she inspected it before hanging it up in her birds cage.
In the morning she found her Quaker parrot had the stitches wrapped around his neck.

He had picked at the stitching, and loosened them. She was very lucky that she was at home at that moment in time, and was able to save her bird.

Had she not been there, her bird would not be here today.

A woman lost her bird because it had chewed through the inside of the hut without her realizing it. Her bird’s head got stuck in the shredded material and he strangled to death.

*************

A grey that had always slept on top of his happy hut,

Was found one morning, hanging upside down with his foot twisted in threads from his happy hut.

In attempting to free himself the poor bird had chewed off a large portion of his foot and two toes.

He was rushed to the vets and he spent 2 hours in surgery and required 50 stitches to have his foot repaired as well as possible.

Had the owner not found the bird when she did, he would have bled to death.

 *************

A woman bought her new Quaker parrot a happy hut; she left the bird alone for just 30 minutes while she went to get her daughter from school.

When she got home, she found her bird covered in blood, it was all over the cage and the walls.

The bird had got its toenail caught in the stitching.

If the bird had been left on its own for a longer period, it would  most certainly have bled to death.

Email received from Jill, who wants others to be warned about the Happy hut.

I thought I would add to the list of complaints about the Not so Happy Hut.
These Huts should be taken off the Market.
The 1st incident I had was with my Conure getting a string wrapped around his neck while I was at work. I happened to come home at lunch time and he was stuck in his hut. I had to remove the hut and cut the string off. He could of strangled himself to death. After that happened I made it a point to check the hut's daily for lose strings or rips.
My bird had been ill for a long time and I was told that he had a bacterial infection. To make a very Long story short, I almost lost my conure because his crop was impacted with the fibres from the happy hut. When I found a new doctor after several months of my bird being severely ill she told me that she could feel something in the birds crop and insisted on surgery. Whatever was in his crop was causing him to vomit and have seizures. When the doctor did the surgery she found a big clump of fibres. I wrote a letter to the Happy Hut Company and sent them copies of the test results and all of the medical bills that I am still paying. They never responded to my letter. I sent them a second letter. They refused to sign for it and returned it to me unopened. This company does not care about what happens to our pets. I would love to find enough people to file a class action suit against them. I have heard other horror stories as well as the ones that you have posted on your website. The day that I found out that it was the hut that was causing all this trouble for my bird I came home and started removing all of the huts from their cages. As I was removing them I heard my Lorikeet screeching. His nail had gotten lodged into the material and thank goodness that we were home when it happened because we were able to safely remove his foot from the hut. We no longer use any kind of fuzzy huts in our cages.

Jill.

this very sad email was sent to me (march 2010)
I just thought that you might want to place another complaint on your site about happy huts and anything that looks like a happy hut. I check on my Conures in the morning, and then in the evenings when I come back from work. Well, today... I saw my Conure stuck in the hut, dead. She tried to chew her leg off and chewed some of it off... her band got caught in the fibers...
I don't know... my other conures knew she was dead... I am heartbroken and am looknig now to replace her... because the cage is not the same and the others seem very sad.. and upset..

I HATE SNUGGLE HUTS... I read about death and other accidents before and did not take it that seriously since I've used them for about 5 years...
I am going to the store tomorrow and getting them a nice wooden box... never fabric again...

This just proves, no matter how long you have had your hut, or how much you check it, this does not guarantee your birds safety, the only way to keep your bird safe, is to take away the happy hut

it only takes a minute to loosen a thread!!

Another very sad email sent to me from Gloria Davis on 10th March 2011

I have had my bird sunny for three years and today when I came home I found him dead. We found him hanging out of the hut with his wings spread but one foot still in. After we took him out of the cage we cut the hut open to see what happen. The string wrapped around his foot where he could not get loose. As we all know when a bird gets real scared and struggles they pretty much have a heart atteck and die. I have never been so mad and uspet. I dont know what to do. There is nothing that can bring him back but something needs to be done!!!

the picture shows how much of the string was wrapped around poor sunny.

I was just reading your page about the happy huts being dangerous and i'd like to add my opinion. Ive been using the happy huts since they came out, and never had any problems until Yesterday. I came home to find my lovely conure hung!!...She had chewed the happy hut and got strings wrapped around her neck and had freaked out and tried flying away to get out of it and ended up strangling herself. I did not know how many other people have come across problems with them until discovering this website, im definately not using them again...

If you have a happy hut in you birds cage.

Get rid of it!!
THERE IS A SAFE ALTERNATIVE TO THE HAPPY HUT!!

If you have had a bad experience with a happy hut, please email me with the details,
so I can add it to this page.
